GE Appliance & Lighting is in the process of voluntarily recalling an estimated 174,000 units of GE Profile and GE
Monogram dishwahers. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has said the recall is due to a fire hazard.
The dishwashers were made by Louisville, Kentucky-based and were distributed nationwide between July 2003 and December 2006. They were sold at retail prices ranging from US$750 to US$1,400.
The CPSC said in its report that a short circuit of the electronic control panel of the dishwashers may result from contact with water.
This poses a fire hazard that could damage property and cause injuries. The commission said the panels of the affected units were made in assorted colors such as black, white, stainless steel and bisque, as well as customized designs.
Owners are advised to stop operating the appliances and unplug the power supply.
